Olaf took 2nd place in the first WC this seson. A very good start for Olaf at this time of year. Alan Campbell came out victorious with over a length, while Olaf battled it out with Tim Mayens from Belgium for the silver medal. The biggest surprise this weekend was probably that neither Ondrej Synek, Lassi Kaeronen or Iztok Cop made the final A, but all had to row in the final B. The other finalist are less known in the singlesscull field; 4.place: Angel F. Rodriguez (CUB), 5.place: Stanislau Shcharbachenia (BLR), 6.place: Ioannis Christou. Nils Jakob Hoff (Norway) ended 3rd in the C-Finalen and 15.plass overall in his WC debut in the single. Read more from Olafs report from Banyoles.
Then the first WC was over..
Almost satiesfied, but also a bit annoyed..
The body was not as fresh and responsive as it was on friday and yesterday. But that is all behind now and I'm looking ahead to the next races. I was very eager to stress Alan and Tim as much as possible in the middle part of the race.. But it didn't work fully according to the plan. After some good starts on both friday and saturday, today was a bad one, which put me almost a length behind (2 sec) in the first couple of strokes. Then I had to work my way through the field. The race turned out to be a figth between the three Olympic finalists from last year. Alan kept the 2 second margin he had built up throughout the whole race and earned himself the gold medal. While Tim and I fougth a hard battle for the silver medal.. We ended up in a desperat sprint at the end of the race, were I pulled the longest straw.. That was how good I was today, which is my simple description of my racing this weekend. I gave it all + a little bit extra.. So that means going home to do some more training. A good start of the WC seson after all, but a bit annoyed that I missed the first couple of strokes in the final. Alan was a bit stonger today, so congratulations!
